Gaining knowledge is good, sharing it even better. I love to share my experience and knowledge, especially with students who are motivated and eager to learn. I mainly teach practical lessons in mycology and botany covering diversity, macro-morphology, microscopy and anatomy.

Practicals taught:

  • Mycology – Bachelor of Science in Biology (2015 – 2021, 2023) | Ghent University

  • Biological excursions (mycological excursion) – Bachelor of Science in Biology (2015 – 2021, 2023) | Ghent University

  • Phylogeny of seed plants (herbarium) – Bachelor of Science in Biology (2023) | Ghent University

  • Biodiversity of plants s.L. – Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry & Biotechnology (2015 – 2021, 2023) | Ghent University

  • Biodiversity of animals – Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry & Biotechnology (2023) | Ghent University

  • The biosphere: plants – Bachelor of Science in Geology (2016 – 2021) | Ghent University

  • The biosphere: plants – Bachelor of Science in Geography (2016 – 2021) | Ghent University

  • Practical Course: Basic Observations in Cytology, Histology and Anatomy – Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2023) | Ghent University

  • Basidiomycetes – Master of Science in Biology (2015 – 2021, 2023) | Ghent University

Practical courses are more than just some exercises in a practical room. Students get some hands-on experience and learn how to use different equipment. To aid them in this process, I – together with some colleagues – made instructional videos:

Teaching goes beyond the practical room. To stimulate students in exploring nature, I created an online practical to aid them in identifying wooden plants on a standalone basis. Check out the website

OCB:

Besides teaching practicals, I am also a member of the Educational Board Biology of Ghent University. Here we discuss, monitor and adjust our education to ensure it remains qualitative and meets today’s needs.

Salon du Champignon:

I am one of the organizers of the determination sessions called “Salon du Champignon”. Here participants gather their own collections and try to identify them with our help. We guide them in using the correct literature, performing microscopy and interpreting their findings. These sessions are mainly attended by members of the mycological society, but also master students following the course Basidiomycota are supposed to attend these sessions. Hereby the students are stimulated to actively explore the fungal diversity, meet and interact with other mycophiles. At the end of the course, a mini-symposium is organized where the students give a presentation on a topic of choice involving fungal diversity, systematics, ecology,…

Our "Salon du Champignon"-format was selected to be part of the "UGent-praktijken". An initiative of Ghent University to share good practices in education among colleagues. (accessible for UGent-staff only)
